BBS stands for Bulletin Board Systems, which were online communication systems that facilitated discussions, file sharing, and messaging in the pre-internet era. BBS started in the late 1970s and were popular in the 80s and early 90s, especially among computer enthusiasts. Users would dial in using a modem, access the BBS and interact with other users. BBS were eventually replaced by the Internet with the rise of World Wide Web in the mid-1990s. Today, BBSs continue to be used by some hobbyists who organize retro computing communities.
